Matrons and Madams Launch Draws Crowds

Her Excellency, Sharon Johnston, wife of Canada's Governor General David Johnston, was effusive in her praise of the Humber School for Writers and her former mentor there, Dean Joe Kertes, at the launch of her first novel, Matrons and Madams in Ottawa on April 14th. The novel is published by Dundurn Press.

Well over three hundred people crowded the large reception room in the offices of the Canada Council to hear her read from the book and be interviewed on stage.

The novel, set in Lethbridge, Alberta in the years after WWI, is loosely based on Johnston's family history, and deals with the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers as well as the problem of sexually transmitted diseases that came home from the war with them.
