Dan Needles is best known as the playwright behind the popular Wingfield Farm series which has played in virtually every English-speaking theatre across Canada. The series played several seasons at the Stratford Festival of Canada and with Mirvish Productions in Toronto at the Wintergarden, Royal Alex and Panasonic theatres. A television series ran for several years on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Bravo Channel.
Needles currently writes columns for Harrowsmith, Small Farm Canada, Farmers Forum and several regional magazines. His latest book, True Confessions for the Ninth Concession (Douglas & McIntyre 2016) is a collection of his magazine writings from the last 20 years. His book With Axe and Flask, The History of Persephone Township won the 2003 Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour.
Penguin Random House published the complete collection of Wingfield stories Wingfield's World in 2011. Needles' latest play, The Last Christmas Turkey, a musical written in collaboration with composer Clive VanderBurgh set a new box office record for Theatre Orangeville in December 2016. For the last five years has worked as a distance mentor with Humber College’s school of creative writing
In 2015, Needles was appointed to the Order of Canada for a body of work that celebrates the people of rural Canada.
