    • Grade 12 English (ENG4U or equivalent) minimum 65 per cent
    • Five Grade 12 U or M courses in addition to those listed above
    • Overall minimum grade point average (GPA) 65 per cent



All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

Mature Applicants

An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older (21 or older for degree programs) as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet program eligibility. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U level or equivalent.

College Transfer Applicants

An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber will use your college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. You may also be eligible for transfer credit if you are admitted to a Humber program.

University Transfer Applicants

An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber will use your university courses and grades to determine program eligibility. You may also be eligible for transfer credit if you are admitted to a Humber program.

Admission selection is based on the academic criteria indicated and the result of the evaluation of additional secondary requirements. Secondary requirements may include a portfolio, audition, letter of intent, references, etc., and vary by program. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission.

Secondary Requirements

In order to continue with your application for the Bachelor of Music - Tuba, you must complete this step in the application process. Applicant selection is based on academic criteria and results of these secondary requirements. This contains all information required to prepare and submit secondary requirements for consideration. If you have any questions, please contact Admissions.

Applicants are required to attend an audition. Applicants must book and pay a $50 fee for their audition as soon as possible, audition times fill up very quickly and space is limited. Please see “Registration Instructions” below to book your audition.

If you have also applied to the Jazz Performance - Introduction to Commercial Jazz program do not book the audition for the 1-year program. The audition for the degree program will be considered for the Jazz Performance program.

i. Audition

Prepared Works: Please have two selections prepared. One must be a jazz standard and the other a classical etude or piece. Applicants are not required to bring an accompanist to the audtion, but jazz tunes whould have a recorded accompaniment using play-along CDs such as the Jamey Aebersold series of books and CDs. A CD player and stereo are available in the audition room.

A) Jazz Standard: You will prepare two jazz standard pieces with CD or mp3/ipod accompaniment, approximately 2-4 minutes each. It is recommended that you play a piece from the Jamey Aebersold Play-Along CD/Book series. Play the melody and one or two choruses of an improvised solo (depending on the length of the tune). The first piece should be a slow or medium tempo ballad, blues, or standard tune such as: I Can’t Get Started, Body And Soul, Laura, Georgia, Sonnymoon For Two, I’m Old Fashioned, Summertime, or Bye Bye Blackbird. The second piece should be a medium or up-tempo song such as Stella By Starlight, Blue Bossa, Tune Up, Yardbird Suite, Just Friends, Green Dolphin St., Joy Spring, or Night In Tunisia.

B) Classical piece: The classical selection can be a technical or lyrical study, etude, or one movement of a concerto. No accompaniment is required.

A series of exercises will be assessed in the following areas:

1.      Sound

2.      Flexibility

3.      Range (high and low)

4.      Tongue Conception

5.      General Musicianship 

Scales: Each student will be asked to play one or more of the following scales: Two octaves ascending and descending of all 12 major, harmonic and melodic minor scales.

Chords: Two octaves of all major (1,3,5) minor (1,b3, b5,bb7), and augmented (1,3,#5) triads.

Sight Reading: You will be asked to sight read in the jazz idiom.

ii. Theory Test

The Theory/Ear Training test is a required test for all students auditioning for the degree program. It is approximately 30 to 50 minutes in length. The test has a written portion and an aural identification/dictation portion. There is no sight singing component. Study theory basics, scales and chords, and be able to aurally identify scales, intervals, and chords played on the piano.

7.      Choose from a list of available assessment dates and follow the prompts

Applicants must meet both academic and secondary requirements in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee and offer of admission.

All secondary requirements will be evaluated and a score will be calculated by the academic school.

Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Our Program

Humber’s Bachelor of Music degree program is unlike any other four-year undergraduate degree in music in North America.

By combining the latest recording technologies and entrepreneurial business strategies with performance, production, songwriting and composition in jazz, pop, R&B, Latin and world music, graduates will be well equipped with the knowledge and skills needed for success in today’s music world.

Founded in 1972, the program has consistently produced many of the most successful commercial and jazz musicians in Canada and the world. With more than 350 students and a faculty of 18 full-time and 80 part-time teachers, our program is the largest, most diverse and highly regarded program of its kind in the country. Long known for the strength of its professors, Humber offers you the opportunity to study privately, in classroom situations, and in several of the more than 50 ensembles directed by a who’s who of Canadian music. As Toronto is the centre of Canada’s entertainment industry, Humber attracts the top professionals in jazz, musical theatre, television, film, commercials and pop – a valuable resource for students unmatched by any other school in Canada.

After two years of core music courses, you will continue with lessons on your major instrument, as well as take classes in music production and music business while also choosing from electives in arranging, composition, advanced improvisation, film scoring, music production techniques, songwriting, ethnomusicology or pedagogy.

You’ll develop musicianship and artistry by presenting your own recital, arranging and composing original material, and recording and marketing your own music.

In addition, you will take courses in music history, theory, aural training and improvisation, and have the opportunity to participate in a variety of ensembles.

All students complete a major recording project/ portfolio in their fourth year. The assembled portfolio, which includes a complete press kit and professional-quality recording, as well as other promotional materials, functions as your calling card for entrance into the music industry upon graduation.

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Perform, compose, produce music at a professional level for entry to the competitive, global music industry.

  • Demonstrate a knowledge of diverse musical styles and contextualize themselves within contemporary music history: specifically defined as the idioms of African American musical genres, mainstream pop music, country/folk music, Latin music, music for musicals and film, art music and jazz.

  • Demonstrate, through performance and composition, a technical and musical mastery of harmonic, melodic and rhythmic structures.

  • Demonstrate, through performance, an extensive knowledge of contemporary musical repertoire and apply appropriate performance skills in diverse music contexts.

  • Compose and arrange in a broad range of contemporary music styles.

  • Prepare and present a portfolio of recorded material reflecting a broad range of styles.

  • Record, edit and produce a broad range of contemporary music.

  • Apply computer applications/music technology skills in composition, arranging and production.

  • Critically analyze and evaluate sound recordings and describe their production characteristics.

  • Demonstrate, through production and performance, organizational, project management, and implementation skills.

  • Demonstrate leadership, teamwork, communication, critical thinking, research and problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of contract law, copyright law, intellectual property rights, royalties, and rules of public domain.

  • Make use of entrepreneurial music business skills to engage in the competitive contemporary music industry.

  • Demonstrate professional “freelance” etiquette relating to job seeking and keeping skills.

  • Demonstrate an ability to research and present findings from primary and secondary sources.

  • Formulate, articulate and present their own ideas about music, art and society through discussion and writings.

  • Demonstrate an artistic awareness and understanding of musical aesthetics.

  • Assess personal strengths, musical and business skills, knowledge, artistic vision, interests, and abilities.


Work Placement

You will participate in a work placement designed to mirror the professional music world, which is largely characterized by contract, freelance and part-time employment. You are responsible for accumulating the equivalent of 450 hours of experience which will allow you to establish contacts and relationships with key companies and industry professionals.
