Humber’s Jazz Performance – Introduction to Commercial Jazz certificate program is a performance-based program designed to help you develop the skills and knowledge required to continue your postsecondary education in music. Students will further develop performance skills and identify and improve upon areas of weakness. All courses have a particular focus on the commercial/jazz field.
You will emerge from the program with a clearer understanding of the field and your own career potential within it, and as a stronger candidate for entry into diploma/degree programs at Canadian colleges and universities.
This intensive, performance-based program provides a comprehensive and integrated curriculum designed for the talented player who wants to solidify his or her knowledge of the fundamentals of western music and/or further his or her current performance skills. You will be challenged to develop and further your performance skills through the jazz-specific areas of improvisation, repertoire development and small group ensemble performance.
Courses Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:
Recognize & identify common styles of music.
Describe the commercial/jazz field in terms of tradition, artists, & styles.
Explain the contribution of various artists to the development of particular styles & idioms.
Analyze the components & performance differences of recorded selections.
Play a repertoire of memorized materials that are considered standards in the commercial/jazz field & reflect the various styles inherent in this music.
Write diatonic melodies in various styles demonstrating knowledge of relevant harmonic & melodic concepts & structures of form.
Perform in an ensemble demonstrating basic ensemble skills such as intonation, tuning, time, feel, balance & dynamics.
Identify their own musical strengths & weaknesses in terms of a performance career in the commercial/jazz field.
Implement strategies & plans for on-going personal & professional growth & development.
Establish a practice of critical self-assessment & professional goal setting.
As a student of our program, you will study with many of Canada’s finest jazz musicians, thereby learning the craft directly from the pros. The program will help you develop the ability to accurately and confidently assess your skills in relation to existing vocational opportunities and future career directions.

Welcome to Humber’s Jazz Performance: Intro to Commercial / Jazz Music Program. We expect that you will find the fine traditions established by the Music Department are continued in this one-year certificate program.
This includes weekly private lessons, small group ensembles and the opportunity to study with some of Canada’s finest jazz musicians.
We hope that you find this year a gift; an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills that form the groundwork of commercial/jazz music. We expect that this groundwork will be solid enough to become the foundation on which you build a successful career in music. This program will push you. It will challenge you to push yourself.
Here you will meet new people, make new friends and build new connections. You will be working day in and day out with others who share your passion for music. Friendships formed during post-secondary studies often last a lifetime. Enjoy!
