All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

Mature Applicants

An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older (21 or older for degree programs) as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet program eligibility. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U level or equivalent.

College Transfer Applicants

An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber will use your college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. You may also be eligible for transfer credit if you are admitted to a Humber program.

University Transfer Applicants

An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber will use your university courses and grades to determine program eligibility. You may also be eligible for transfer credit if you are admitted to a Humber program.

Selection Includes Secondary Requirements:

Admission selection is based on the academic criteria indicated and the result of the evaluation of additional secondary requirements. Secondary requirements may include a portfolio, audition, letter of intent, references, etc., and vary by program.

In order to continue with your application for Creative Book Publishing, you must complete this step in the application process. Applicant selection is based on academic criteria and results of these secondary requirements.

Applicants must meet both academic and secondary requirements in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility does not guarantee an offer of admission. Please refer to the program page at www.humber.ca to verify this program’s academic admission requirements. If you have any questions, please contact Admissions.

Secondary Requirements

Applicants are required to submit a resume, essay and attend an interview.

i. Resume

Applicants must submit a detailed resume, including the names and contact information for two references.

ii. Essay

Applicants must submit a one-page essay about a Canadian authored book published within the last year. Include a very brief discussion of the content but place an emphasis on other elements of the book: format, price, cover and interior design, cover copy and any marketing details that may be on the book. Comment on the implications of the choices made in producing and marketing this book and compare it to others in the bookstore.

iii. Interview

Applicants are required to attend an interview. This interview is a requirement as Creative Book Publishing is a program that relies highly on group work, collaboration and interaction within the classroom environment. Please see “Registration Instructions” below to book your interview.

Applicants must submit the resume and essay through SlideRoom. SlideRoom is a secure site where secondary requirements are collected, scored and stored. Log-in to https://humber.slideroom.com and create your free account. There will be additional instructions once your account has been created.

Registration Instructions for Interview

Applicants must register to attend this admissions event. Log-in to MyHumber to register:

  1. Log-in to MyHumber
  2. Select the Applicant tab
  3. Select the Applied Programs tab
  4. Select your Year and Applicant Number from the drop-down menu, then click Submit
  5. Click on “Do I Have Any Missing Requirements”
  6. Click on “Go to Events” (located under the “Link” section, near the bottom right of the page)
  7. Choose from a list of available assessment dates and follow the prompts

All secondary requirements will be evaluated and a score will be calculated by the academic school.

Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Our Program

Humber’s Creative Book Publishing program combines creativity and entrepreneurship with the only opportunity in Canada to specialize in literary agenting/rights management and publishing technology. Taught by working professionals, and visited by industry experts and published authors, students of this program regularly make valuable contacts.

After two months of foundational publishing courses (including business models, acquisitions, contracts, copyright, technology, creativity, operations, and content management), students choose three of five specializations: editorial, marketing, literary agenting/rights management, advanced technology or a research project. In the final month, students are organized into groups representing publishing enterprises. They create business plans and publishing lists, design covers, develop websites, and plan marketing campaigns. This intense summative assignment provides an unprecedented knowledge base, which prepares graduates for a successful career in publishing.

Courses Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Create a freelance business in any of the following areas – Editorial, Publicity/Public Relations, Design/Packaging.

  • Represent authors as literary agents to publishing houses in Canada and internationally.

  • Publish their own creative works independent of publishing houses.

  • Critically analyze proposals and literary works for legal implications including copyright issues, libel, trademark, moral rights and intellectual property rights.

  • Prepare business documents related to publishing such as business plans, annual reports, and business proposals in conformity with industry and market standards.

  • Evaluate national and international markets.

  • Prepare sales and promotion strategies and materials, and negotiate agreements for the selling of rights of authors’ works.

  • Produce publishing content for media outlets as arts commentators, book reviewers, and TV/radio producers.

  • Analyze manuscripts for quality and profitability.

  • Analyze and predict publishing operations in the areas of distribution, credit, supply chain, information technology, warehousing and inventory control, and customer service.

  • Analyze public policy and granting structures available to publishing as a Canadian cultural industry.

  • Prepare marketing strategies and create marketing documents and materials for book proposals, book jackets, and sales presentations.

  • Complete structural edits and copy edits, perform proofreading, and production editing as part of the editorial process.

Book publishing is an innovative, cultural industry that adapts to rapid and constant change in the marketplace and to evolving technological requirements while continuing to nurture creativity and growth. Find opportunities in editorial, marketing, technology, contracts, subsidiary rights, sales, management/operations and production/design. Or work in closely related fields as a content manager, publicist, literary agent, book reviewer, arts journalist, bookseller, educator, or entertainment/copyright/intellectual property expert in government agencies and industry associations. Humber also encourages entrepreneurship and the development of new enterprises. Creative writers may be interested in learning the publishing process.

Industry Partnerships

Humber has a large number of publishing industry partners who offer internship, networking and career opportunities. Most full-time internships run for 12 to 16 weeks and offer an honorarium of $1,200 to $1,500. Through the program, we also offer several paid internships.

Humber/Trent Collaborative Program

The Creative Book Publishing Program at Humber College and the English Masters Program at Trent University have entered into a collaborative arrangement which enables a select number of students each year to simultaneously earn an MA degree in English (Public Texts) and an Ontario Graduate Certificate in Creative Book Publishing.
